Xavier chose a good time to play its best basketball, by winning four games in a row, and beating Villanova at home 66-54 Sunday. Naji Marshall had 17 points for the Musketeers (15-13, 7-8, 102nd). Marshall was a major catalyst in the 17-0 run XU had in the second half that broke the game wide open. Phil Booth had 14 points for the Wildcats (20-8, 11-4, 30th), but 12 of those came in the first half. This win is only the second time Xavier has beaten Villanova in 13 past meetings. Cincinnati was able to hold of a rally at Connecticut to win 64-60 Sunday. Keith Williams led UC with 12 points, while Justin Jenifer and Cane Broome each added 10 points for UC (23-4, 12-2, 15th). Broome had the game-clinching three-pointer in his hometown of Hartford. UConn (13-14, 4-10, 139th) was led by Christian Vital (14) and Alterique Gilbert (13) in scoring. Cincinnati got their biggest win of the season Thursday night versus UCF, 60-55. The home victory strengthens the solid tournament resume for the Bearcats (22-4, 11-2, 15th). Justin Jenifer (12), Keith Williams (12), and Jarron Cumberland (11) all scored double-digits for UC. Aubrey Dawkins led the Knights (19-6, 9-4, 31st) with 18 points. Cincinnati defended homecourt by beating Wichita State 72-62, Sunday. The victory brings Cincy (21-4, 10-2, 17th) back on the winning side after losing to Houston last week. The Bearcats were led by Jarron Cumberland’s 27 points including six three-pointers. The Shockers (12-12, 10-2, 110th) were led by Dexter Dennis’ 14 points and 13 rebounds. Wichita St. was also able to outrebound UC 51-42. The Bearcats entered into the top 25 of the Coaches Poll this week. Cincinnati plays host to UCF (19-5, 9-3, 29th) Thursday night at 7 PM.
