The San Francisco Giants have won the 2012 World Series. In game 4, the Giants defeated the Detroit Tigers 4-3 in 10 innings. This victory completed a four-game sweep. The Tigers erased a 1-0 deficit with a two-run dinger by 3B Miguel Cabera of Detroit to make the score, 2-1 Detroit. Giants C Buster Posey responded with another two-run blast that gave SF the lead 3-2. This marks the first time in which both batting champs homered in the same World Series, let alone in the same game. Tigers DH Delmon Young tied the game with a solo home run. At 3-3, the game went into extra innings. In the top of the 10th inning, Giants 2B Marco Scutaro knocked in the winning run with a base-hit. The Tigers failed to score against Giants P Sergio Romo in the bottom-half of the 10th and San Francisco claimed their seventh all-time crown.
The San Francisco Giants defeated the Detroit Tigers 2-0, in game three of the World Series. All the Giants need to do, is win one more game, to claim their second World Series championship in three years. In three WS games, San Francisco has allowed three runs. Only the 2001 Arizona Diamondbacks and the 2004 Boston Red Sox have achieved the same feat (both won). Unfortunately, the Tigers have lost six consecutive WS games. Game four begins at 8:07 p.m. on FOX.
Giants 3B Pablo Sandoval hit three home runs in game 1 of the World Series to lead San Francisco to an 8-3 victory over the Detroit Tigers. In game 2, the Giants were able to win again, this time, mainly because of P Madison Bumgarner pitching seven scoreless innings. Two years ago, he also did not allow a run in his first WS start. This makes Bumgarner the second pitcher to not allow a run in each of his first two WS starts, with the other being Christy Matthewson. Now the Giants have to win two more games to claim their second title in three years. The next three games will be played at Comerica Park in Detroit. San Francisco is 4-2 in playoff road games this season, while Detroit is 3-2.
The San Francisco Giants won game 7, defeating the St. Louis Cardinals 9-0 in the NLCS to advance to the World Series. They will play the Detroit Tigers in a best-of-seven series. For the Giants, it will their second appearance in the WS in three years. San Francisco becomes fourth team to win three straight games against the defending champions, when trailing in a series to advance. Cardinals C Yadier Molina was the bright spot for St. Louis, batting 4 for 4 in the loss. Alas for him, the remainder of the team was 3 for 30. Giants SS Marco Scutaro was named NLCS MVP.
The Detroit Tigers are headed to the World Series. After sweeping the New York Yankees in the ALCS by winning Game four 8-1, the Tigers will be in their second WS in seven years (2006 vs. Cardinals). Tigers SP Max Scherzer struck out 10 of 16 batters, and SS Jhonny Peralta hit two home runs. The Yankees never held the lead in any of the four games.
Meanwhile in the NLCS, the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the San Francisco Giants in Game Four, 8-3 and now lead 3-1 in the series. Cardinals SP Adam Wainwright allowed one run in seven innings. St Louis can clinch tonight in Game 5, at 8:00 p.m. on FOX.
The Detroit Tigers defeated the New York Yankees in game 3 of the ALCS to take a 3-0 series lead in a best of 7 championship round. In 8 1/3 innings, Tigers P Justin Verlander allowed one run on three hits. Meanwhile the Yankees had to go to their bullpen after P Phil Hughes left the game with a stiff back. LF/DH Delmon Young hit a solo shot for Detroit, while IF Eduardo Nunez did the same for New York. 3B Miguel Cabrera also had an RBI for the Tigers. With one more win Detroit will return to the World Series for the first time since 2006. But this postseason has taught fans one thing: No lead is safe.
The Washington Nationals and the Cincinnati Reds became the first teams to reach 90 wins this season. For the Nats’, it was the first time they were able to achieve the honor first. For the Reds, the last time they won 90 games before anybody else was in 1976, when they became the only team to sweep the New York Yankees in the World Series.
